School Choice

January 4, 2012

Dear Parents/Guardians of Seventh and Eighth Graders,

Due to increased demand, Leland and Gray has adopted formal procedures for students to enroll in our school based on the Southeastern Vermont Superintendent Region: Public School Choice Collaborative. As part of this agreement, Leland and Gray allows up to ten students to attend from towns that do not have school choice. In the past, formal procedures were unnecessary because we never exceeded the limit. However, we are now concerned that more students may wish to attend during the 2012-13 school year through the Public School Choice Collaborative than space permits.

If your student would like to attend Leland and Gray in 2012-13 and does not live in a school choice town, please complete and submit the attached application to the main office by the deadline, March 1, 2012.

According to the formal procedures, student applicants will be entered into two lotteries by March 5th. The first lottery consists of applicants who have older siblings currently enrolled at Leland and Gray; they have first priority. The second lottery consists of applicants who do not have older siblings at L&G. As principal, I will notify the applicants by mail of the results of the two lotteries no later than April 1st.

By April 15th, students must accept the offer to enroll at Leland and Gray. Those who do not meet this deadline are dropped from enrollment. If needed, a third lottery will be held of the remaining applicants to fill any newly vacant spots.

If you have already submitted an application for your student to attend during the 2012-13 school year, then it will be entered in the appropriate lottery. Any student who wants to attend L&G, but who is not accepted through the Public School Choice Collaborative, may choose to pay tuition at the annual rate to enroll.
