Foundations Of Art (H80100) 1 credit
Grades 9-12 Fine Arts credit
This studio course begins by focusing on drawing from observation with pencil, charcoal, ink, and other materials. Students explore painting, printing, collage, and graphic design using the computer as a tool. They learn basic principles of visual expression as well as historical styles and periods. The second quarter emphasizes form, function, and space in sculpture. Students explore sculptural media and respond to spatial problems. They learn the basics of throwing clay on the wheel, slab and coil clay construction, plaster mold-making, found object construction, and other sculptural media. An individual sketchbook contributes to each student’s quarterly portfolio presentation. Students participate in school art shows.
Video and Animation (H80700) 1 credit
Grades 9-12 Fine Arts credit
Prerequisite(s): Foundations of Art, Ceramics and Sculpture or Design Using Adobe Photoshop, Flash and iMovie, Movie Maker, students write scripts, create storyboards and set design, direct actors, and edit movies. The class examines successful examples of film and animation. Using Flash and iMovie, students create 3D claymation and animated 2D imagery. The class interrogates the impact of mass media and the subtle and not-so-subtle ways it affects American culture. Students participate in the school art show and collaborate with the Leland and Gray Players to experience real-world video production.
Design (H80410)
Grades 9-12 Fine Arts credit
This combined studio and computer lab course that investigates the practical applications of the visual arts including graphic design, advertising, and architecture. Artistic principles such as composition, balance, impact, and contrast are explored using a variety of mediums. Students have an opportunity to focus on a single area of design – architecture, advertising, graphic design, interior design, fashion design, or product design – as an independent project. Students learn Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator software applications. An individual sketchbook contributes to each student’s quarterly portfolio presentation. Students participate in school art shows.
Ceramics & Sculpture (C80501) 1 credit
Grades 9-12 Fine Arts credit
Students master the basics of ceramics and sculpture techniques of rendering in a three-dimensional space. They learn the production of functional and non-functional pottery, as well as, sculptural clay objects. Students examine the way sculpture has been created and perceived throughout history in various cultures and look at historical styles and techniques. An individual sketchbook contributes to each student’s quarterly portfolio presentation. Students participate in the school art show.
Painting Exploration (H80600) 1 credit
Prerequisite(s): Foundations of Art, Ceramics and Sculpture, or Design Fine Arts credit
In this course students explore oils, acrylics, watercolors, monoprints, and mixed media. They study color theory and painting styles, including contemporary art. All students develop their own individual style in painting. Students participate in the school art show.
Advanced Placement Studio Art (H80705) 1 credit
Prerequisite(s): Foundations of Art, Ceramics and Sculpture, or Design, and teacher recommendation Fine Arts credit
Students wishing to create a portfolio for consideration in the AP Studio Art examination and possibly earn college credit enroll in this course. The portfolio exam consists of three sections, breadth, quality, and concentration. This program provides the opportunity to earn college-credit and/or advanced placement in college. Those enrolling in this course should plan to work all year on their art, including beyond the school day. This is an opportunity to meet the demands of a professional artist.
Advanced Studio Arts (H80200) 1 credit
Grades 9-12 Fine Arts credit
Prerequisite(s): Foundations of Art, Ceramics and Sculpture, or Design
Students engage in complex visual problem-solving, focusing on drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture. At the end of the semester, students pursue an independent course of study in a single medium with a consistent thematic and stylistic vision. The course culminates in a portfolio review at the end of each quarter. Participation in the student art show is required. Students may participate in the AP Studio Art Exam at the conclusion of the course.
Desktop Publishing & Graphic Design (H62500) 1 credit
Grades 9-12 Fine Arts credit
Prerequisite(s): Foundations of Art, Ceramics and Sculpture, or Design
Students learn the functions of design and art principles used in desktop publishing, by creating graphics, manipulating images, designing typography, and using digital cameras and scanners. Students learn page layout using Adobe InDesign and create graphics and adjust images with Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. This course provides students insight into careers in design, web design, page layout, and branding. Students collaborate and design Leland and Gray’s yearbook, the Messenger, participate in fundraising campaigns, ad sales, and meet numerous deadlines. Project management and digital citizenship are essential aspects of this class.
