Winter Activities are a curricular learning component of education, and great effort is made to include an activity that every student can enjoy. These usually include downhill and cross-country skiing, jewelry-making, cooking, bowling, horseback riding, gym games, running, fitness training, and trap-shooting. Some Winter Activities require transportation, materials, or admission fees. Fee waivers are available for qualifying students.

All students and teachers are required to attend. Students who miss Winter Activities without a pre-approved excused absence will be in violation of the school attendance policy.

Here are answers to the most frequently asked questions about Winter Activities:

Why Winter Activities during school time?

Excellent education focuses on the whole student in mind and body. Teachers impart knowledge and skills for today, for college preparation, and for future careers. They also teach lifelong habits to promote a balance between work and fitness, both needed for good health and attitude. Activities promote respect, collaboration, and team-building between teachers and students that transfer to learning in the classroom, all of which contribute to a positive school climate.

Why Winter Activities in the winter?

All people need to stay physically active year-round. Winter poses particular challenges because many youth lack the necessary clothing, equipment, or transportation to take advantage of Vermont’s winter activities. Winter is dark, cold, and isolating in our rural locale. By providing activities, L&G helps students make connections in the community, find ways to get involved, and put a curb on the winter blues.

Why Winter Activities for Leland and Gray?

Our students have diverse interests, values, and backgrounds. Some have traveled to distant places, others have deep roots in the land, and still others benefit from both. All their experiences become assets during Winter Activities, since they depend on each other’s maturity, responsibility, and school spirit.

Why Winter Activities for Vermont?

From parents to the governor, we recognize that far too many students graduate high school and move too far away for comfort. Vermont offers a lifestyle, a community, and outdoor fun like no other state. Early involvement in Vermont’s nature and human treasures attracts youth to remain and contribute as actively working, civically minded adults.

The 2011-12 Winter Activities brochure will be available at school and online by Monday, November 14, 2011.
