TOWNSHEND – The Leland and Gray girls lost to the Green Mountain Chieftains 33-44 last Tuesday, February 14. The girls played avidly with good support from the boys’ team among other fans. The six consecutive losses of the girls has brought them to a modest 6-10 record, and they are now ranked twelfth in the state. Though the game was relatively competitive the whole time, the girls simply could not put the pieces together to win it. Though they played with much aggressiveness and passion, they lacked a sense of uniformity in the beginning that haunted them later in the game.
The beginning of the game started slowly for both sides, both with a lot of turnovers and steals, resulting with an 8-9 lead, Chieftains. By the second quarter, the Chieftains shrugged off their mistakes and retaliated with another ten points versus the Rebels’ mere two points (scored off a put-back made by junior captain, Alex Morrow). By the second half, the Rebels finally picked up their game while scoring more points. However, the lead the Chieftains earned from the previous half gave them the comfortable advantage, allowing them to maintain that lead for the remainder of the game with no chance to let it go.
Notable players of the game include: Senior captain Callie Ginter, who took a charge in the second, made some exceptional steals and put up a few points. Junior captain Alex Morrow, who did phenomenally on offense, accumulating eight points. Finally, junior captain Ashley Goddard made most of the team’s rebounds, and put up a three at the end to raise the crowd to their feet scoring a total of eleven points, the top scorer for the Rebels. Goddard and Morrow combined made 58% of the team’s shots.
