VALENTINES DANCE

The Valentines day dance will be this Saturday from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.. This dance is for high school students only.  $5 admission $2 food.

VALENTINE FLOWERS

Give a flower to someone special this Valentine’s Day.  The National
Honor Society is selling carnations--one for $1.50 or 4 for $5.  Order
yours at lunch or through any NHS member.  Flowers will be delivered
on Valentine's Day!  Money raised during flower sales will be used to
establish a scholarship fund to support students in outside-school
learning programs such as those offered by Governor's Institutes,
Experiment in International Living, VIS,  SYA and the like.  See Ms,
Landenberger for more info about this new opportunity.

CAFETERIA OPEN AFTERNOONS

The cafeteria will now be open from 2:30 until 3:00 after school on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. This is a trial to see if students will take advantage of these extended cafeteria hours.

TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT THE HARMFULNESS OF TOBACCO!

L&G students are lighting up more each year.  According to the 2011 YRBS results, 15% of our students smoked their first cigarette prior to age 13.  The Vermont average is just 7%.   Side stream and secondhand smoke is putting many of our L&G students at risk, as 57% were in the same room with someone smoking and 48% were in a car with someone smoking within the 7 days before the survey. Just 28% of our students said that a parent had discussed the dangers of smoking with them in the past 12 months.

BAKERS NEEDED!

Volunteers are needed to cook up some desserts for two fundraisers that benefit the senior class funds and Project Graduation. The first event is next Friday evening, Feb. 17th for a Latin Big Band show at the Vermont Jazz Center put together by L&G's very own Dan DeWalt. Then again on the following Friday, the 24th, Dan Dewalt is having a CD release party for his other band, Green Mountain Mambo, and we need bakers again. Students who volunteer would not only earn money for the class and get a ticket towards the car raffle at Project Grad, but they would also get to listen and dance to great music for free! Students, families, and staff are all welcome to whip something up or bring in something scrumptious to help out a good cause...the senior class! Can you do some baking?  Do you know a local business willing to donate something yummy? We need to know asap if we can do this, so please respond to Megan Altshuler at  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.  so we can coordinate this event.

HEY! You!!
HEY YOUAnother activity that is new this year is Newspaper. Dan DeWalt is leader of this group but he is looking for others to lead parts of the paper they are working to bring to our community several times a year. Lots of newsworthy life takes place in a community as small even as a school, and it is such an opportunity to learn to write and report and editorialize and lay out and cartoon about life at large. Please consider joining Dan and the other staff members on Thursdays after school.

On Mondays are a very cool fiber workshop called Spun Monkey (check out her website) and a new study skills workshop called Planning for Success in Middle School. While HEY! Help always happens Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, it will not happen on Monday of this coming week. Tuesday brings Ceramics with Ms. Wilson, Robotics with Peter Golrick (apparently, at the last session, the group converted a battery charged engine to a solar charged engine), Writing at Valley Cares, and D&D.  This Tuesday, and perhaps on Tuesdays to come, Jason Sperling and Guitar Club will meet with Joel Eisenkramer and Sound Scholars. Thursdays is another full line-up with Newspaper, Ms Wilson's Photography class, World Drumming, and Bowling. We still have high hopes that every one of you will try something new this year. Please note: Not-So-Heavy Metal Steampunk Design with Kevin Burke will begin on the 27th, right after the break. Any questions, ask Susan Gunther-Mohr or Megan  Altshuler.
