dogs at LG smLast year, Phoebe Connolly, School Counselor informed the School Board of a proposal pilot program for Leland & Gray. The pilot program involves incorporating a comfort animal into the counseling program. There are a number of schools within Vermont that have utilized comfort animals within their school community. There is research which has been conducted which shows that comfort animals can increase student's positive attitudes towards school and learning as well as reduce student stress, anxiety and improve school attendance. Her presentation, which the Board was in support of, can be found here.

Phoebe has been working on training a dog she adopted this summer, Louie, a four-month old mixed breed puppy. He's an international fella and comes from Turks & Caicos in the Carribean. Phoebe got him to help her other dog, Gemma, a rescue dog from Puerto Rico, to assist with her nervousness around new people. Louie is a sweet, affectionate and mellow dog. Louie will be in Phoebe's office so that any students with allergies or a fear of dogs are aware of his location. We are looking forward to incorporating Louie into our school community. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Phoebe and/or Mr. Thibault.
